LESSON ONE: Oregon History - Setting the Stage

Students will build background knowledge about Oregon history and learn about Oregon’s social and legal racism by analyzing primary sources and reading about the history of Black Oregonians. This lesson provides a foundation for understanding the events of the 1980s discussed in later lessons. Topics discussed include Black exclusion laws, discrimination in the early twentieth century, and schools, community-police relations, and activism in the mid to late twentieth century.
